Colbrook Apartments

Colbrook Apartments is Better Housing Coalition’s $60 million affordable community rising on the site of the former Colbrook Motel in Chester, one of the few Virginia lodgings listed in the Negro Motorist Green Book between 1956 and 1967. The redevelopment restores the original Colbrook sign and adds a historical marker and an educational gallery alongside 144 to 150 one-, two- and three-bedroom homes for households earning 30–80% of area median income, with 94 of them opening first. Apartments have modern finishes, in-unit washers and dryers, and private patios or balconies, and the buildings have elevators, secure access, a community room and on-site management. The waitlist is open for a November 2026 opening.
