Any experience taking landlord to small claims court?

Does anyone have any experience actually taking their landlord to court over a security deposit? I am in a situation where I think small claims court might be my last option as my old leasing company, Real Property Management - Richmond Metro, is trying to say I have to pay $4,000+ to repair and paint the walls in the house I lived in for 2 years. Found excrement in stairwell of corner lofts

… and were told to "avoid them at all costs."
